HP NEW LAPTOPS

HP released a slew of new consumer and business products–including 17 new laptops–at an event in Berlin earlier today. In addition to HP and Compaq notebooks, new products include a refresh of its TouchSmart all-in-one PC, a Voodoo-branded desktop and notebook (the Voodoo PC site had been down for several days), and a 30-inch LED-backlit flat-panel display.

The new notebook roster consists of six consumer models and 10 business laptops, including the HP EliteBook, a 14.1-inch thin-and-light with an anodized aluminum case and magnesium alloy chassis. These are also the first HP laptops to offer AMD’s Puma platform with Turion 64 X2 Ultra processors and the still unannounced Intel Centrino 2 platform, also known as Montevina. Several models also offer an optional LED-backlit display, which is lighter and more energy-efficient.

Consumer Notebooks
Both the Pavilion and Compaq Presario models (PDF with details here) include a new surface design, HP Imprint 2. Depending on the model and configuration, the Pavilions also include touch-capacitive controls, optional widescreen displays with flush bezels, discrete graphics (both AMD and Nvidia), Blu-ray drives and TV tuners. HP also announced several new accessoires including Bluetooth headphones and a redesigned media docking station.

The events made headlines all over the world and the governments of Indian and Nepal got involved as well. Anti Indian/Hrithik sentiment died down quickly when it became clear that the alleged statements were a fabrication and the rumors were spread by a malicious third party, possibly the Bollywood mafia, still pissed about not getting the foreign rights to Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai (2000). Nepal born actress Manisha Koirala played an important role in getting the news to the people in Nepal that the accusations were false.

In January 2001 Hrithik Roshan was again involved in a controversy. This time about a poster created and used by the Democratic Alliance in South Africa in November 2000 to woo Indian voters. The poster used his face without permission. The ANC reacted angrily and threatened to ban his films.

When the film was over there was a stampede and mass hysteria broke out. He got mobbed. The police had to come and escort him out of the cinema and away from a crowd of thousands. Personal Quotes

(November 2000): "I take all this hysteria as a compliment."

(2000): "I am glad I have the intelligence to understand what is happening to me. If I allow myself to get affected by all this hype, I'll stunt my growth as an actor and be damned for life. I know I am good at my job, and I am sure I will be damn good one day but right now, I also know how bad I can be."

(November 2000): "I have been elevated to such a high status that the fall will be very steep."

(December 2002): "After two years of being in films I've realized that I don't need to do movies just for the sake of it. Now I will not do a film unless the role is to die for. The true crossover films are 'Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon' and 'Life Is Beautiful' where the director goes entirely by his conviction, culture, community and conditioning. I am hoping, not just for me and my father and family, but for Indian cinema that Krrish (2006) will succeed, so we can envision an even bigger extravaganza. We want to afford that freedom to take our cinema higher. I believe we are very close now to getting noticed on a world platform.

I was always the pet of my teachers in school probably because I was considered to be very cute. Because of my innocent looks I usually got away with a lot of mischief. I was spoilt and pampered by everyone. All I had to do was sport a lost-boy look and I would have things my way. At home too, if I wasn't given something I wanted, I would simply sit with a long face till I got it.

On his first villain role in Dhoom 2 (2006): "I've played the good guy long enough. Now it's time for me to get seriously evil. I always wanted to play a cool villain. And since the bad guy in Dhoom 2 is multi-dimensional, playing this nightmarish guy is a dream come true."

(December 2006): If someone pretends not to recognize me, then he needs to get a life.

On his infamous kiss with Aishwarya Rai in Dhoom 2 (2006): "I did give it a lot of thought. There was enough reason and inspiration here to go ahead. I tried to make it as beautiful as possible. And I stand by it completely." (April 2007)

TROPIC THUNDER REVIEW

In spite of the fact that he is one of Hollywood’s most bankable stars, I must confess that I am not a fan of Ben Stiller. His over-the-top antics have annoyed me in films ranging from “There’s Something About Mary” to “Zoolander”.

I saw a brief glimmer of hope in 2006, with Stiller’s appearance in “Night at the Museum”. The film was extremely entertaining and Stiller’s performance, while not award-worthy, was amusing and watchable.

After “Night at the Museum”, I believed that Ben Stiller was in the midst of a career renaissance. But, then I went to see, “The Heartbreak Kid”, and I concluded that there was no renaissance - just an anomaly. Ben Stiller returned to my “unwatchable” list.

It was with this in mind that I attended “Tropic Thunder”, a film that not only starred Ben Stiller, but was written and directed by him as well. I fully expected to dislike it - but, much like a jungle ambush, it took me surprise. It is, hands down, the funniest film that I have seen this year.
“Tropic Thunder” follows the production of a Vietnam war film featuring four famous but individually challenging entertainers. Tugg Speedman (Ben Stiller) is an action movie star looking for an award-caliber role that will revive his sagging career. Kirk Lazarus (Robert Downey Jr.) is an Oscar-winning thespian who will stop at nothing to “step into the skin” of his character. Jeff Portnoy (Jack Black) is a heroin-addicted slacker and star of the “Fatties” movie franchise who will stoop to any level to feed his habit. Alpa Chino (Brandon T. Jackson) is a hip-hop star who is trying to segue into film. Kevin Sandusky (Jay Baruchel) is a rookie actor hoping for his big break with his cinematic idols.

This talented but motley crew is led by Damien Cockburn (Steve Coogan), a first-time director who is losing control of his production. After an epic dressing-down by studio head Les Grossman (Tom Cruise), and with some assistance from burnout writer Four Leaf Tayback (Nick Nolte) and pyromaniac stunt director Cody (Danny McBride), Cockburn decides to inject some reality into the film by dropping his prima donna cast into the jungle with little more than a map. Unbeknownst to Cockburn, the jungle is fraught with all manner of dangers, not the least of which is a brutal drug lord’s heroin den. It is going to take the performance of their lives to negotiate their way out of this scene.

I have to admit that, after watching this film, I have developed a cautious respect for Ben Stiller. This film is one of the most biting, witty pieces of satire that I have seen on-screen in a long time. The story is original, the dialogue is smart and the action moves the film along without being ridiculous. While it is not necessarily Oscar material, I would be surprised if “Tropic Thunder” does not make its way onto the nomination list for a few Golden Globes.

Much has been said about the performance of Robert Downey Jr. as Kirk Lazarus, an actor so oblivious to anything beyond his craft that he is willing to cross the boundaries of political correctness and decency to inhabit his character. Without a doubt, he has created a very amusing and intentionally annoying character. I have always enjoyed Robert Downey Jr., and he did not disappoint me in this film .

But, for me, the highlight of this film was not the performances of the lead actors, but rather the cameo performance by Tom Cruise. I cannot remember the last time that I laughed so hard or so loud in a theater. Cruise’s performance was hilariously campy - he stole every scene in which he appeared. I am still not convinced that Cruise could carry a comedy on his own, but in this ensemble piece, he succeeds in delivering the best comedic performance that I have seen this year. It will be a crime if he is not nominated for a Golden Globe.

“Tropic Thunder” is a film that I would recommend without hesitation. I entered the theater expecting a slightly tasteless display of toilet humor, and exited having spent two hours watching a smart satire that mocks the political incorrectness and the Hollywood vice that sits on its surface. Whether you see it for Robert Downey Jr. or you see it for Tom Cruise, by all means see it - this is one of the summer’s best films.
